Hap. Polystigma Cichlids (Nimbochromis polystigma) | Fish R Us
Add an extraordinary dynamic to your large display aquarium with the Magnificent Hap. Polystigma Cichlids for sale. Also affectionately known in the hobby as the “Polystigma” or “Livingstonii’s Cousin,” this impressive species is famous for its intricate, leopard-like dark spots overlaying a shimmering background of gold, green, and bronze. As dominant males reach maturity, they develop a stunning, rich blue coloration across their face and body that contrasts beautifully with their patterned markings.
Polystigma are highly active, robust swimmers with an abundance of personality. They are known for their clever hunting behaviors in the wild and quickly learn to recognize their owners in the home aquarium, making them incredibly interactive pets.
Key Features & Behavior
Intricate “Leopard” Pattern: Their detailed, camouflage spotting offers one of the most distinctive and natural aesthetics available among large African cichlids.
Impressive Display Size: As a larger-growing Malawi Hap, they command attention and bring a powerful, regal energy to open-water aquariums.
Intelligent & Interactive: Exceptionally alert and curious, these fish will actively track movement outside the glass and enthusiastically greet you at feeding time.
Care Guidelines
Diet: Carnivorous. They are natural predators that thrive on a high-protein diet. Provide high-quality large cichlid pellets, krill, mysis shrimp, and chopped silver sides or market shrimp.
Aquarium Decor: Ample swimming room is vital. Give them a spacious aquarium with a fine sandy substrate and a few large, heavy rock structures around the perimeter for security. Ensure all rockwork is firmly anchored.
Tankmates: Best housed in large setups with other robust Lake Malawi Haps, Peacock cichlids, or large Synodontis catfish. Avoid housing them with small fish that can easily fit into their generous mouths.
