Vibrant Ps. Chewere Zebra Cichlid (Pseudotropheus sp. “Elongatus Chewere”)
Energize your African cichlid display with the spectacular Vibrant Chewere Zebra Cichlid. Hailing from the sediment-rich rocky reefs near Chewere on Lake Malawi, this highly sought-after “Elongatus” variety is famous for its striking, high-contrast color palette. Mature males undergo a magnificent transformation, showcasing a deep royal blue body broken by rich black vertical bars, all beautifully framed by a bright, fiery yellow-to-orange dorsal fin and tail accents.
Like all Mbuna, they are full of spirited personality, intelligence, and bold behaviors. They are remarkably hardy, enthusiastic feeders, and make an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to add a truly eye-catching centerpiece colony to a specialized rock-dwelling aquarium.
Approximate size: 3.5″ (Unsexed)
Key Features & Behavior
Breathtaking Color Contrast: The brilliant combination of neon blue, deep black, and glowing yellow makes this one of the most visually stunning Mbuna variants available.
Sleek, Dynamic Swimmer: Their elongated body shape allows them to navigate tight rockwork with incredible agility, providing constant movement in the tank.
Spirited Personality: Exceptionally active and territorial, they offer a fascinating look into the complex social hierarchies and natural behaviors of Rift Lake cichlids.
Care Guidelines
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. In the wild, they comb algae mats (aufwuchs) on rocks. In the aquarium, they must be fed a diet rich in vegetable matter, such as high-quality spirulina flakes, premium veggie pellets, and occasional algae wafers to prevent digestive issues.
Aquarium Decor: An extensive rockwork layout is essential. Stack rocks securely along the back of the tank to create an intricate matrix of caves, tunnels, and visual barriers. Use a sandy substrate to accommodate their natural digging habits.
Tankmates: Best kept in a harem setting (one male to multiple females) to manage aggression. They house beautifully with other robust, similarly tempered Lake Malawi Mbuna species. Avoid housing them with peaceful, open-water Haps or Peacocks.
