Utaka Cichlids

Utaka cichlids represent a fascinating and peaceful lineage of cichlids endemic to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi. Unlike their aggressive, rock-dwelling cousins (the Mbuna), Utaka are streamlined, open-water schooling fish that primarily belong to the genus Copadichromis. In the wild, they congregate in massive numbers over underwater reefs to feed on drifting zooplankton. While females and juveniles sport a subtle, silvery camouflage pattern, mature dominant males undergo one of the most breathtaking color transformations in the aquatic world, developing brilliant metallic blues, deep blacks, and striking ivory crests. They are an excellent choice for hobbyists looking for a less aggressive, highly active, and visually stunning African cichlid community tank.
