Approximate size: 2+” (Unsexed)
Key Features & Behavior
Iconic Ivory Crest: The brilliant, snow-white dorsal blaze creates an unparalleled, high-contrast silhouette that instantly draws the eye.
Peaceful Open-Water Cruiser: Unlike rock-dwelling Mbuna, these Utaka cichlids prefer to school and glide elegantly in the open upper and middle water columns.
Gentle & Docile Nature: One of the most peaceful “Hap”-type cichlids available, making them a joyful and low-stress addition to specialized community tanks.
Care Guidelines
Diet: Omnivorous planktivore. In the wild, they feed on zooplankton in the open water. In the aquarium, they thrive on high-quality cichlid flakes, floating or slow-sinking micro-pellets, and regular treats of frozen daphnia, cyclops, and mysis shrimp.
Aquarium Decor: Ample open swimming room is critical. Provide a fine sandy substrate and arrange a few vertical rock structures or slate pillars around the perimeter of the tank to offer a sense of security without cluttering their swimming space.
Tankmates: Best housed in a harem environment (one male to multiple females). They are perfect companions for peaceful Malawi Peacocks (Aulonocara) and other docile Copadichromis or Placidochromis species. Avoid housing them with aggressive Mbuna.
